Brežice

Iron Bridge

more than a year ago
When it was built in 1906, the iron bridge spanning both the Sava and Krka rivers was one of the greatest technical achievements of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and over a century later it is still a great source of pride for the residents of Brežice. Actually constisting of two separate iron spans connected by a causeway, the entire length of the structure is over 500m. Today the bridge is still open to one-way traffic leading south out of town, while the wide shoulders are a popular with cyclists and in the summer it's not uncommon to see local youths jumping from the top of the iron truss into the waters below.
