First mentioned in 14th century town chronicles, the City Tower has a peculiar history. Rebuilt when the city walls were consolidated in the 16th century, merely two hundred years later it had grown to encompass five floors. Fires put paid to this however, and the tower fell slightly, but it is still as dominant as one would expect. Of particular interest however is the clock, which has dials on only three sides. The story goes that the owner of the castle didn’t want to put money towards its construction, so the side of the tower facing the castle is sans dials. A harsh punishment, we must say.
