A Persian religion that slowly made its way west thanks to Roman legions, Mithraism was unique in Eastern religions as it involved worshipping of just a single deity. Mithra was a sun god, and the rumour goes that he created the earth by sacrificing a bull, which is an impressive feat to say the least. Either way, fine Mithra shrines and temples surround the Ptuj area, with two in particular standing out. One of these is in the village of Spodnja Hajdine, with the other coming across the river in Zgornji Breg. Be sure to call the Ptuj tourist office for information on visiting.
