Continuing with the theme of Ptuj holding all the records for age in Slovenia, we find Slovenia’s oldest public monument still in its original location, the Orpheus Monument. Originally a grave marker from the second century, it stands almost five metres high and has many mythological stories carved into it. The naming comes from the relief of Orpheus, playing his lyre whilst mourning the loss of his one true love. We’ve all been there. Most of the reliefs have eroded away, but this is still a very important historical monument in Ptuj.
