Gdańsk Market Hall

Pl. Dominikański 1, Gdańsk ,   Old Town         07 May 2026

Planned for Summer 2026, Gdańsk's Market Hall in the Old Town looks set to become part food hall, part meeting place and part living monument—proof that in this city, even grocery shopping can come with a side order of medieval history.

Gdańsk's Hala Targowa (Market Hall) will reopen in the Summer of 2026 as a major new food and social hub.
Built in 1896 in a Neo-Gothic style, Gdańsk's Hala Targowa (Market Hall) history was backdated even further when rennovations in 2005 revealed the foundations of one of the city’s oldest churches, the 12th century Church of St. Nicolas! While those ruins have been preserved, the main part of the building is currently in transition to becoming a major new food and social hub in the heart of Gdańsk. It's late 19th-century interior has been beautifully restored, and the project aims to blend everyday shopping, dining and culture under one roof, giving the long-underused landmark a thoroughly modern second act.

Spread across three levels, the venue mixes casual street-food energy with more polished restaurant spaces. Upstairs, expect seafood, Italian cuisine and full-service dining suited to slower lunches and evening meals, while the ground floor leans toward quick bites and market-style variety, from ramen and Georgian dishes to burgers, pizza, coffee and cocktails. Downstairs, deli counters and artisanal groceries will sit alongside one of the building’s most intriguing features: exposed remains of the 12th-century Romanesque Church of St Nicholas.

Romanesque Church of St Nicholas

At the very bottom of the Market Hall, the foundations of the 12th-century Romanesque Church of St Nicholas have been left as they were found, providing a small, living archaeology museum in the basement along with a display of photographs, objects found during the excavations and drawings of how the church might have looked. You can also visit the Romanesque Cellars whose entrance can be found in the courtyard outside.
