To say it dominates the view from the road below would be something of an understatement, and Prem Castle is no less impressive when you finally reach it. First mentioned in 1213, this L-shaped castle with a Romanesque nucleus has gone through a number of changes in the 800 years since, all of which are handily explained in the museum located within. All the other castles in the region are covered here too, as well as the history of the Ilirska Bistrica area. The museum is just one of many interesting rooms inside, with the decadent ballroom possibly our favourite. It was badly damaged after World War Two but has been restored as closely to its former glory as is possible. The glistening golden mirror may be the only original artefact inside, but don’t let this clamour your enjoyment; the fascinating paintings on every wall will surely make up for that. A conference room, exhibition space and a small chapel can also be found, making Prem Castle an excellent (and excellently romantic) spot for weddings.
