Located some 140km away from Kazan itself, this is exactly what it claims to be. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is evidence of the medieval city of Bolgar, an Islamic stronghold that served as a capital of the Golden Horde in the 13th century. Two buses head this way from Kazan every day, with the journey lasting two and a half hours.
