A landslide destroyed the original monastery in the 16th century, causing those in charge to up sticks and move a kilometre upstream. The Pechersky Monastery now sits in a gorgeous position on the edge of the Volga. It resembles a small kremlin of sorts, with plenty of fascinating religious structures within its red brick walls.
