Only founded in 2010, the cheekily-named Heaps Good Wine Company is one of the youngest in all of Slovenia, and with its current production of just around 500 cases per year, it's also one of the smaller wineries. However, what Heaps lacks in scale, it more than makes up for in personality, charm and most importantly the quality of the wine, which includes some excellent Sivi Pinot, Modri Pinot and Modra Frankinja. Owned and operated by Nicholas (a New Zealander who studied winemaking at home and spent a decade working at more than a dozen different wineries in six countries before finding himself in Slovenia) and Marija (a Slovene native), Heaps is a small family-affair through and through. Visitors to the cellar in Ritoznoj, in the hills just south of Maribor, won't find any flashy tasting rooms or well-stocked gift shops, but small groups can sample the latest vintages straight from barrique barrels or crack open bottles featuring hand-drawn labels while leaning up against the wine press.
