According to the archives kept in Maribor and Graz, the Kapela estate has been producing wine at least as far back as the year 1300, which the tenant were first obliged to pay a tax on the harvest to the local landlords. There are many legends and tales dating from the following 600 or so years - which your guide will kindly explain to you in details on any visit - but the vineyards modern history begins in 1921, which it was nationalised by the newly formed Slovenian state. The wine cellar itself dates from 1959, and has been duly expanded over the years to its current capacity of 1.3m litres of wine. In recent years the label has been rebranded, and bottles of decently priced white wines can be found in supermarkets across the country - the semi-sweet Traminec is one of the our personal favourites.
