The Peršolja estate can be found in the centre of Brda between Šmartno and Vipolže, just south of the village of Kozana, which in addition to its copious production of wine and fruit, is best known for the bell tower of St Jerome Church, reconstructed according to the plans of famed Slovene architect Jože Plečnik. The winemaker's motto is the rhyming Peršolja = Dobro Volja (Good Mood), and from our personal experience we can in fact confirm this to be the case. While both their white and red wines have been receiving acclaim and winning various awards since the mid-1990s, the standout for us is the excellent Cabernet Franc (2004), a spicy barrique that is the perfect accompaniment for heartier meat dishes. If you can't make it to Brda, Peršolja wines can be found at larger Mercator Hypermarkets, Interspar and Qlandia shopping centres elsewhere in Slovenia.
