Located in the far western reaches of the Brda region, the Reia estate and the pretty little settlement of Neblo on which it's situated is virtually surrounded on three sides by Italian territory. However, it's worth coming the few extra kilometres to get there, as the award-winning wines are excellent and the landscape expectedly breathtaking. The vineyards themselves boast much older vines than most others, which have a lower yield but produce more balanced grapes and stronger full-bodied wines that age very well. While the majority of the wine is of the white variety, one of the exceptions is the Khmer red, which won top honours at the 2009 Slovenian Wine Festival, and whose name is both a portmanteau of Kabernet and Merlot, and a reference to the 'savagery' of the Khmer Rouge, as this same word aptly describes the wine itself. The standout of the whites is the Malvazija, while Reia's Poanta took home the bronze medal at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards in 2011. All of the bottles are distinguished by colourful labels that may appear to be some kind of abstract modern art, but are actually a stylised form of Morse code spelling out the name of the vineyard and the wine.
