One of our favourite wine growing regions is home to the Vipava 1894 winery. Its founding date is significant, as it was the first officially registered winery in Slovenia, and also managed to operate continuously during the turbulent years of war and occupation in the first half of the 20th century. Nowadays, the winery is a modern operation, and boasts the country's second largest wine cellar and is a joint stock company. Tastings and tours take place Monday to Saturday from 08:00-18:00 by prior arrangement. Lasting about an hour, visitors will not only get to sample the various varieties of wine produced whilst strolling amongst wine casks, but also learn about the storied history of the winery and perhaps even some of the production secrets. For those who can't make it to Vipava for a visit, their wines can be found in most supermarkets and wine shops throughout Slovenia, and also ordered from their website.
