Part financed by the spiritual founder of Zakopane, Tytus Chałubiński, and designed by the Warsaw architect Józef Dziekoński (1844-1927), Zakopane’s Holy Family Church was consecrated in 1899. Its rather ugly neo-Roman exterior betrays a wealth of good things inside, a wonderful mix of folk art motifs, pseudo-Baroque and Art Deco. Of interest are Piotr Niziński’s painted ceiling in the presbiterium and Stanisław Witkiewicz’s Holy Mother of the Rosary chapel. Witkiewicz also designed all of the church doors, lending a Zakopane Style twist to an altogether mixed and interesting church and was also responsible for chapel of St. John the Baptist, the
most valued possession inside the building.
