Dolina Kościeliska

more than a year ago

An easy option for those unable to do strenuous hikes but wanting to take in the Tatras’ rugged beauty on foot. The picturesque - and practically flat! - 5.5 km green trail bypasses several caves, springs, and gorges, while maintaining wonderful mountain views all along the way. To get here, catch a bus from the temporary bus station, getting off at Kiry, then look for the green trail. For those driving their own vehicle, paid parking lots (25zł for one day) are located near the bus stop.

The trail ends the Hala Ornak mountain hut and takes about 1h30 one way. If you wish to do only a part of the route, consider doing a turn-around at the Stare Kościeliska meadow, which features a modest shrine built by the area’s iron workers (30 minutes from Kiry), the ‘Kraszewski Gate’, a 0.5km long gorge (35 minutes from Kiry), or the Stone Owl (literally a rock in the shape of an owl, 50 minutes from Kiry). If you don't mind a seriously rocky trail, do veer off the path at Pisana Polana (about 1h05 from Kiry) into Kraków Gorge, the most beautiful gorge in the Tatras. More adventurous types might enjoy the valley's many caves: Mroźna, Obłazkowa, Mylna, Raptawicka, and the Dragon's Den.
