Orla Perć

more than a year ago
Not for the faint of heart, and certainly not for anyone with a fear of heights, Orla Perć is the closest thing to a via ferrata that the Polish Tatras have got. This highly exposed, very steep trail has chain handrails running through much of it (and a heart-attack-inducing ladder on the side of Zamarła Turnia), but no cables to secure yourself to. The 'Eagle Path' runs between Zawrat and Krzyżne Pass via Kozi Wierch and Granaty. The 4km red trail takes between 6 and 8 hours to complete in good conditions (and you must also plan a return). The trailhead at Zawrat can be accessed from the Murowaniec mountain hut (blue trail, 2h30) or from the Five Polish Ponds Valley (blue trail, 1h50 from the mountain hut). Parts of the trail are one-way, so do not start from Krzyżne. Once at the end, you can make your way down to Murowaniec via the yellow trail (2h15) or the Five Polish Ponds Valley, also by yellow trail (1h30). Some people prefer to do only part of the route; you can access Kozi Wierch from Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy (blue trail then yellow, 1h45) or the Five Polish Ponds Valley (black trail from the northwest side of the biggest lake, 1h45), and Skrajny Granat from Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy (yellow trail, 2h10).
