The 1930’s were a rather tense time in this region along the Yugoslav-Italian border. As such, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini ordered the construction of the so-called Alpine Wall. Not so much is left of the wall today, but the trail around Primož hill above Pivka leaves a few reminders, not the least 481m of underground passages that give a keen insight into armed existence. This underground fortification was one of the most heavily fortified points on the wall. The intriguing anti-tank obstacles called the ‘Dragon’s Teeth’ can also be found, near to Lake Cerknica.
