A small museum in the grounds of Snežnik Castle, this two-room museum is something of a shrine to the area’s relationship with its fauna. The first room is all taxidermy, showcasing the wide range of animals living in the Green Karst, including the big three European beasts (lynx, bear and wolf). It is the second room that is the true highlight (and surprise) however. Dormouse hunting has been an important part of regional cultural since the mid 1800’s. The tradition started because the pesky little critters would go on feeding rampages, and their numbers needed to be kept low for the nobleman hunters. Lo and behold it turned out that dormouse meat was rather tasty, their fur could be used to make fine hats and their fat had unknown health qualities. The museum traverses the history of the tradition, as well as showing the evolution of traps and interesting information on the dormouse itself. English information boards are also ubiquitous.
