Housed in an old Yugoslav Army social building, the tourist information centre in Ilirska Bistrica is more than just a shell in which to pick up a map. The curious history of the building itself, where members of the JNA would hang out (as difficult as that is to imagine), is worth a visit in itself. Inside we also find a small gallery that exhibits the work of local artists as well as those from further afield (including Croatian artists, as the border is a mere 10km away), with the exhibitions changing every three weeks. There is also a small theatre hall that puts on various types of show throughout the year. Head to the municipality website to stay on top of any forthcoming performances. Of course, the basic role of the tourist information centre is also fulfilled, with helpful staff on hand to answer any questions and provide any assistance that might be required.
