Two large karst fields make up the municipality of Loška Dolina, the product of thousands of years of nature grafting away, to create a land more in touch with its rural side than most. Lush forests are the theme of the day here, and within these forests all manner of wildlife can be found. Want to go bear watching? Fancy seeing the lynx or the wolf in its natural habitat? Loška Dolina can provide this in spades. Even the humble dormouse is vital here, with a great tradition in hunting the little mammals that is celebrated with raucous approval every autumn. Loška plays host to a number of other unique festivals such as the Land of Ostrnice, where the haymaking custom is highlighted.
Loško Polje and Babno Polje are the two aforementioned karst fields, the latter of which is considered the coldest inhabited part of Slovenia and as such has garnered the nickname the Slovenian Siberia. Don’t let this put you off however, as a more inviting place you will not find. It isn’t just nature nature nature of course, as Loška Dolina is home to various interesting historical and cultural sights, such as Snežnik Castle and the surrounding complex.
