Northwest of Snežnik, Mašun is another excellent starting point for climbing the largest non-Alpine mountain in Slovenia, but to say there is much more up here is definitely an understatement. Surrounded by forests, the little hamlet has made great strides in order to provide an all-encompassing experience for any visitor. With a proud history of hunting, a 1km long educational trail takes walkers through Mašun’s history, passing two towers that are all that remains of a castle along the way. Cycle tracks, cross-country trails, even a small ski and toboggan slope can be found on Mašun, as well as a mountain lodge that will have carnivores salivating to say the least.
