The highest peak of the karst and the highest non-Alpine mountain in Slovenia, Snežnik goes a long way to proving that there is more to mountains in Slovenia than the majestic peaks of the north. With three peaks that are snow-covered as late as spring, Snežnik offers the incredible views that one can expect from standing 1,796m in the air, and also a handy toposcope to help you make out what you’re looking at from the top of this Dinaric mountain. As well as being a protected botanical reserve on account of its rich vegetation, Snežnik is also home to a fine range of beasts, from bears to wild boars, from lynx to deer, and many birds including the golden eagle. Jan Valvasor once claimed that it ‘harboured dreadful wilderness’. Don’t be put off however, Valvasor wrote this in 1689, and now this area of dry valleys, sinkholes and over 300 caves and shafts is just waiting to be explored.
