First mentioned in the 13th century, Jablje Castle is a cultural monument of importance for good reason. Its current incarnation dates to the 16th century and the house of Lamberg. Whilst it didn’t suffer too badly during World War 2 it was heavily plundered and looted in the subsequent years, being converted into apartments for a while amongst other things. It went under heavy renovation between 1999 and 2006, but it is mostly famous for the frescoes inside painted by Franc Jelovšek, including a particularly bizarre camel-riding Chinese tambourine player. We’ll leave you to make up your own mind about that one.
