Kraków Gorge & Dragon's Den

more than a year ago
The Kraków Gorge is widely considered the most beautiful in the Polish Tatras, and we agree - the lush green and tall rock formations make this an unforgettable place in the Kościeliska Valley. Consider this an obligatory stopping point during your hike; look for the yellow trail beginning at Polana Pisana, about an hour's walk from the Kościeliska Valley trailhead at Kiry. Once there, the gorge is just a few minutes away from the bottom of the valley, though the path is somewhat uphill and very rocky. The easy part ends some 250m from the start of the trail, where you're more that welcome to sit, look around, and eventually make your way back. However, decide to proceed, and things get interesting: namely, there's a very large ladder leading up to Dragon's Den, a steep and narrow 44m long cave tunnel fitted out with chain handrails (claustrophobes beware). This part of the trail is one-way and requires good fitness, a reasonable head for heights, and a headlamp; the cave is open year-round, but keep in mind that it becomes dangerously slippery during rain and ices over in the winter. The full loop trail takes about 50 minutes to complete and is recommended for anyone with a taste for adventure.
