The first refuge near Morskie Oko was built as far back as 1823 and went through several changes before burning down in 1865. In 1864 a new building was completed, capable of sleeping 25 people; it was expanded in later years but sadly also burnt down in 1898. Only the 1891 coach house remained, and this was turned into a proper mountain hut, which still functions today as the oldest refuge in the Polish Tatras. Next door is the newer 1908 building; between the two there are some 80 beds, but reservations must be made ahead of time if you wish to stay overnight, and sleeping on the floor is not allowed. Hot food and beer are of course available, as is hot water in the bathrooms, and the view is one of the best.
