The importance of the dormouse to the region can’t be underplayed, and this heritage is kept alive with the raucous Dormouse Night every October, signally the beginning of hunting season. Once undertaken all over Europe the dormouse hunt (or Polhanje in Slovenian) now only takes place here, making it yet another important point on the trail of Slovenian tradition. The shenanigans open with the traditional run called ‘Following in the Footsteps of Dormice’.
